Around London, it is not uncommon for stray dogs to be found wandering the streets. Gordon was a two-year-old puppy who had been abandoned and left to live in the city’s streets. The local council pound picked him up and brought him into their facility. In the United Kingdom, the pound will keep the dog in their possession for seven days, while waiting for someone to claim them. If no one comes, the animal is put down.
Luckily for Gordon, Mayhew Animal Home Rescue agreed to take him to their shelter in November of 2014. Their vets examined him, and in additions to multiple allergies, it was discovered the puppy was totally deaf. The rescue center knew his chances of being adopted were significantly reduced due to his disability.
The staff at Mayhew Animal Home worked with Gordon to teach him sign language. They hoped to build confidence in the young dog and increase his chances of finding a permanent home. Gordon learned sign language quickly. But almost a year went by, and no one adopted him.
Josanne Griffin-Mason saw pictures of Gordon on Facebook and started scrolling through his photos on the Mayhew Animal Home Rescue page. She had her partner, Richard Neenan checked it out too. They agreed to set up a meeting at the rescue center with the puppy.
Josanne and Richard fell immediately in love with Gordon. Josanne said the dog’s smile and warm demeanor was what initially attracted them to the puppy. In August of 2015, they officially adopted Gordon.
Gordon loves his new home and has settled in wonderfully. The couple lives close to a golf course, where they often walk with Gordon. In addition to a pet rabbit, the couple also adopted another rescue shortly after Gordon. Mookie, the new dog, and Gordon get along famously. They’re often seen playing together or napping alongside each other.
Gordon has learned to bark on command and wears a vibration collar to help his owner’s keep him safe while out on their many adventures.
